Muncaster Castle

Holehird Gardens
|
|
You can tour the house, enjoy a stroll in the very extensive
gardens and visit the owlry - plus see a display of flying hawks!
This is a historic stately home, with 200 acres of rhododendron woods.
They were planted in the late 18th Century and are probably the most colourful
display of rhododendrons you will ever see. We recommend you visit it
in May, when the blooms are at their best. May Day weekend through to
the beginning of June is best, but they go on until the end of June.
The drive to Muncaster Castle via the Wrynose and Hardknot Passes is
spectacular, but not a route for the timid driver. The alternate route
is to drive South past Lake Coniston and then travel north up the coast
road to Muncaster Castle. |

They have an extensive show of acers, rhododendrons, hydrangeas and other
exotic plants. Beautiful gardens in a stunning location. |

Wildlife
Carr Crag enjoys a prolific variety of wildlife: |
 |
Deer
Deer visit the garden almost daily. Pull back the curtains very
slowly in the morning, as they are very timid. |
|
 |
Badgers
Frequent the garden regularly. There is evidence of an old Badger Set at
the bottom of the drive, although no recent activity has been observed.
|
|
 |
Rabbits
The land of Beatrix Potter and “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” -
what more can we say! |
|
 |
Squirrels
Sadly, only the grey squirrel now visits us. Up until around 1995 Red Squirrels
lived in the garden. |
|
 |
Birdlife
A real haven for bird lovers! A wide variety of Warblers and Flycatchers
visit us in the spring and summer. You can also see Goosanders and other
waterfowl on the river below. |
